The Band
The White noise is a now-defunct Post-Hardcore band based out of Los Angeles. They were signed to Fearless Records from early 2015 until they played their final show on December 15, 2018. The ex-unclean vocalist of the band, as well as their ex-guitarist, now play in MADRONA.
The Song
Sunspots is a work of fine art. The song comes from the 2017 album AM/PM. It wastes none of its generous 5:25 of runtime nor any of its overwhelming melodic potential. The drum fills are consistently rhythmically pleasing and I can often find myself subconsciously drumming them out on any surface near me. The bass work is a fundamental cornerstone for the song’s rhythm and it does a good job as such. The guitar introduction is ominous yet not unwelcoming; it uses dissonant notes to create a sense of foreboding which is quickly resolved within the hard-hitting introduction to the first verse. The verses contain relatively sparse lyrics, containing four lines each. Keep in mind that just because there are few lines does not mean that there are bad lines. Both verses effectively employ metaphor and rhyme. The choruses are heavy and varied from the verses and bridge lyrically and melodically, but the song flows effortlessly between its parts. The bridge opens strongly and ends the same way, but offers some time to breathe between the first solo and the final chorus. The vocal performance delivered on this track is impressive throughout but is truly distinguished in the final chorus. The song ends with another impressive guitar solo followed by white noise which eventually fades into silence. The song can be listened to in any location or situation: Whether alone in your room, surrounded by a crowd, or doing something monotonous. It is an approachable and impassioned listen which I never tire of. My favorite lyrics are “pour out my glassy eyes” due to the overwhelming emotion poured into them.
